Sine Nomine Associates engineers present on OpenSolaris on IBM System z at European conferences

David Boyes, CTO, and Neale Ferguson, Principal Engineer, at Sine Nomine Associates were featured speakers at recent European OpenSolaris on IBM System z conferences.

David Boyes spoke at the 3rd European IBM / Guide Share Europe Workshop for z/VSE, z/VM and Linux on System z, and both men delivered presentations at the OpenSolaris Developer Conference. The conferences took place in Dresden, Germany in October 2009.

David Boyes' presentation, "OpenSolaris on System z," took place October 26, 2009 at the 3rd European IBM / GSE Workshop for z/VSE, z/VM and Linux on System z. The presentation covered the current state of OpenSolaris for System z as a annual report to the GSE membership. The presentation was a summary of the improvements in build 100 and the current build that Neale was working on at the time.

On October 30, 2009, Neale Ferguson and David Boyes spoke on "OpenSolaris on IBM System Z Hardware" at the OpenSolaris Developer Conference. Neale Ferguson's paper was included in the conference proceedings.

Synopsis:

The "Sirius" project is the first external project to successfully port OpenSolaris to the IBM System z platform extending the reach of the operating system outside Intel or SPARC. This presentation describes the design decisions made when planning and implementing the port of OpenSolaris to IBM's z/Architecture. It also describes and lists the changes made to the tools used to build the OpenSolaris code, as well as to the code itself. Apart from having great "hacker" appeal and a high "cool" factor there are interesting and perhaps compelling arguments for pursuing the goal of porting OpenSolaris to z/Architecture. These arguments will be examined in the presentation. An brief introduction to IBM's z/Architecture will be provided so that attendees can appreciate how this port of OpenSolaris has exploited the features of the platform.
